External Review of the Office of the Chief Coroner Released

Released on June 20, 2018

Former Chief of the Saskatoon Police Service Clive Weighill has released his external review and recommendations for the Office of the Chief Coroner.

“The recommendations are based on the findings and observations obtained through discussions and suggestions from employees, stakeholders and partners,” Weighill said.  “The recommendations also reflect best practices found in other Canadian coroner and medical examiner models.”

The report presents the findings with respect to the mandate, structure, goals, roles and responsibilities of coroners and staff.

The comprehensive review contains 44 recommendations that encompass these core areas as well as the relationships with supports and partners such as laboratory services, police, funeral homes, transfer services and the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“I want to thank Clive Weighill for his thorough and diligent work on this review,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan said.  “The government will consider the report and recommendations and issue a full response accordingly.”

On November 29, 2017, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General appointed Clive Weighill to undertake a review of the Office of the Chief Coroner.  The review was to examine the mandate and performance of the office and offer recommendations.
