Today, Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Prince Albert Carlton MLA Joe Hargrave, on behalf of Paul Merriman, Minister of Social Services and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), joined Jan Thomas, Executive Director of Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity and community members to break ground on construction of a new Habitat for Humanity home in Prince Albert.This Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) home will be more affordable and will help improve the quality of life for a Prince Albert family.
“Our Government is dedicated to working in partnership with organizations like Habitat to build safe, affordable housing necessary for healthy, sustainable communities,” Goodale said. “Soon, this new home will help transform the lives of a deserving Prince Albert family, forming the solid foundation needed for them to grow and prosper in this community.”
“Supporting Habitat for Humanity projects is one way our government helps provide safe, quality, and affordable homes for Saskatchewan people in greatest housing need,” Hargrave said. “We are honoured to work with the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity to support yet another family with a stable home to call their own and would like to thank everyone involved for helping another family achieve homeownership.”
“Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity is happy to celebrate the start of another great partner build,” Thomas said. “We are exceptionally grateful for the ongoing support of our provincial and federal government funding. Every year we seek to help more families than previous years, and without this consistent government support, we would struggle to meet our goals. These funds make a difference to our Habitat partner families.”
Quick facts:
- Saskatchewan Housing Corporation is providing $50,000 in funding from the federal/provincial 2014-2019 Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement towards this project to support Habitat for Humanity’s efforts of making homeownership a reality for this Saskatchewan family in Prince Albert.
- The home will be a 1,175 ft squared feet (109 m2) bungalow with a partially developed basement. The home will be located at 589 24th Street East in Prince Albert.
- The province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity totals $10.85 million since March 2009. This total includes $1 million announced with the 2018-2019 provincial budget, with funding from the federal/provincial 2014-2019 Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement.
- The Government of Canada is currently rolling out its National Housing Strategy (NHS) – an ambitious 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need as well as repair and renew more than 300,000 housing units and reduce chronic homelessness by 50 per cent.
- The NHS is built on strong partnerships between federal, provincial and territorial governments, and on continuous engagement with others, including municipalities, Indigenous governments and organizations, and the social and private sectors to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Canadians.
- This investment supports Saskatchewan’s Housing Strategy by ensuring Saskatchewan people in greatest need have access to affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
- Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home or other Habitat homes.
