Funding On Track for First Nations and Métis

The Government of Saskatchewan’s 2018-19 Budget continues to support First Nations and Métis with significant funding for a number of important services including health, education and social services.

“The Government of Saskatchewan remains committed to the province’s First Nations and Métis people,” Government Relations Minister and Minister Responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Warren Kaeding said.  “With this budget, we will stay on track with our economic recovery, while continuing to provide services and programs and economic opportunities for all Saskatchewan residents.”

Despite record low energy and resource prices, the 2018-19 Budget provides approximately $200 million for targeted program funding, primarily for First Nations and Métis organizations or individuals.  This funding amount excludes provincial expenditures that may be accessed by the general population, which also provides services and benefits to First Nations and Métis people.

Highlights include:
  • $16.8 million for funding directed at First Nations and Métis education initiatives and institutions (Ministry of Advanced Education);
  • $74 million in gaming agreement transfers to First Nations and Métis organizations (Ministry of Government Relations); 
  • $27.8 million in on-going funding of career training programs and services for First Nations and Métis people (Ministry of Immigration and Career Training); and
  • $5.1 million in funding for programs and services connected to the Joint Task Force on Improving Education and Employment Outcomes for First Nations and Métis People (Ministry of Education).
