Province Proclaims Canadian Federation of University Women Day

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed September 14, 2017, as Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Day.

CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary, non-governmental organization that works to improve the status of women and girls by promoting human rights, quality public education, justice and peace.  There are CFUW clubs in every Canadian province with nearly 10,000 graduate, student and associate members.

In Saskatchewan, CFUW has more than 170 members and operates in five cities: Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Estevan and Yorkton.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to recognize the work that the CFUW does to promote post-secondary education to women,” Advanced Education Minister Kevin Doherty said.  “There are many benefits to a post-secondary education and I am pleased that the efforts of the CFUW will help support women pursuing their post-secondary studies in Saskatchewan.”

“Advancing the rights of women and girls begins with improving access to education, and I am proud of the 170 Saskatchewan women who are committed to this work through CFUW,” Education Minister and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Bronwyn Eyre said.  “The scholarships and grants provided by CFUW empower the recipients, inspire Saskatchewan women and girls, and in turn, benefit the province as a whole.”

“The CFUW Saskatchewan clubs are proud of their work in providing scholarships to women students in the province and appreciate that the work of our members is recognized by the Government of Saskatchewan,” CFUW Saskatchewan Regional Director Margaret Hendry said.  “We aim to continue our work to support women in society.”

CFUW Day was first proclaimed by the province in 2011 to recognize the importance of the post-secondary education, scholarships and grants provided by Saskatchewan CFUW clubs.

Today, CFUW clubs in Saskatchewan provide approximately $40,000 in yearly scholarships to university and college students, and grants to music and science festivals, early learning centres and other community endeavours.
