The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to join with the federal government and other provinces in celebrating Women’s History Month.Women’s History Month, celebrated each year in October, marks the anniversary of the “Persons Case” of 1929, in which Canadian women were formally recognized as “persons” under the law.
This year, the focus is on women in the economy.
As of 2016, Saskatchewan women make up 51 per cent of the population and bring their own unique perspectives to social, economic, political and public policy issues. In 2015, the employment rate for women in Saskatchewan was 76.3 per cent, highest among the provinces. Women had the strongest representation in the health care, social services, education and retail trade sectors.
“Our government is proud to support Women’s History Month and to celebrate the vital role women play in the workforce,” Minister responsible for the Status of Women Bronwyn Eyre said. “In Saskatchewan, we have a lot to celebrate.”
The number of women working in Saskatchewan in 2015 was 263,100, up seven per cent from 2010.
“Women in Saskatchewan are strong contributors to our province’s prosperity, and are a vital part of its growth,” Economy Minister Steven Bonk said. “In addition, through their various roles across our diverse economy, Saskatchewan women provide goods, services and countless opportunities that enhance the quality of life and standard of living for all who live here.”
