Ten Outstanding Citizens Inducted into Saskatchewan Order of Merit

Tonight, Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield will invest 10 recipients into the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, the province’s highest honour, at a ceremony in Regina.

“I’ve had the great opportunity as the Lieutenant Governor to travel across the province and meet the amazing and inspiring people who continuously give of themselves to better their communities,” Solomon Schofield said.  “The individuals chosen for the Saskatchewan Order of Merit are truly remarkable citizens, whose efforts deserve public recognition.  I offer all of them my sincere congratulations and thank them for their long-standing contributions to Saskatchewan.”

The 2017 recipients are:

  • Murad Al-Katib, Business Owner and Exporter, Regina;
  • June Avivi, Retired Educator, Saskatoon;
  • Martha Cole, Artist, Disley;
  • Roland Crowe, Retired First Nations Leader, Regina;
  • Rod Gantefoer, Businessman and Former Politician, Melfort;
  • Paul J. Hill, C.M., Businessman and Philanthropist, Regina;
  • Robert D. Laing, Former Chief Justice, Court of Queen’s Bench, Saskatoon;
  • Dr. Roberta McKay, Physician and Philanthropist, Regina;
  • Robert Mitchell, Q.C., (posthumous) Former Attorney General and Lawyer, Regina; and
  • Brigadier General (Ret’d) Clifford Walker, C.D., Retired Canadian Forces and Educator, Regina.
Today’s 10 recipients will join 219 previously invested.  Past recipients have excelled in the arts, business, the public service, various occupations and industry, community leadership, and volunteer service.

The Saskatchewan Order of Merit was founded in 1985 to recognize Saskatchewan citizens for outstanding social, cultural and economic contributions.
