Nearly 45 athletes, coaches and organizers who represented Saskatchewan in summer games across Canada this year will be introduced in the Saskatchewan Legislature this afternoon.“On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan I would like to congratulate all athletes, coaches and organizers on their strong performances this past summer,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “The countless hours of hard work and dedication that each of you put in to achieve your goals is evident — you have made Saskatchewan proud. Thank you for showcasing Saskatchewan’s diverse talents in sport and for being excellent ambassadors of our province.”
Athletes from across the province competed in the 2017 Canada Summer Games, North American Indigenous Games and Tony Cote First Nations Summer Games.
At the North American Indigenous Games held in Toronto, Saskatchewan athletes competed in 14 different sports, ranging from archery to canoeing, volleyball and wrestling, ranking second overall with 65 gold, 54 silver and 47 bronze medals.
During the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, Team Sask competed in 16 different sports, placing seventh overall with eight gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals.
Regina was host to the Tony Cote First Nations Games in August of 2017, drawing an attendance of 5,000 athletes, coaches, chaperones and officials across 74 Saskatchewan First Nations communities. Athletes at the games competed in nine sports including golf, soccer, softball and beach volleyball to list a few.
The Government of Saskatchewan is a supporter of recreational initiatives, physical activity and competitive sport across the province.
