Released on May 29, 2017
May 28 to June 3 has been declared Victims and Survivors of Crime Week in Saskatchewan, coinciding with the national victims week of the same name. The theme for this year is “Empowering Resilience.”“I cannot think of a theme that gets closer to the essence of what victim services volunteers do across this province each and every day,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “Their work provides people with the tools to get through traumatic situations that many of us can’t even imagine. I’d like to thank them for their dedication to making Saskatchewan a better place to live.”
While the week is an opportunity to raise awareness about the needs of victims of crime and tragedy, it also recognizes the role Victim Services program staff and volunteers play in the recovery process.
Earlier this month, Minister Wyant hosted a luncheon honouring long-term volunteers who have completed 15 and 20 years of service. In 2015-16, roughly 180 police-based victim services volunteers helped nearly 9,400 people in Saskatchewan.
Victim Services programs are available across the province and provide a range of services that include support immediately following a crime, and throughout the criminal justice process.
