Today Martensville MLA Nancy Heppner on behalf of Deputy Premier and Education Minister Don Morgan joined students, teachers, dignitaries and representatives from the Prairie Spirit School Division to celebrate the completion of the newly expanded and renovated Martensville High School. The Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $27 million toward this project.“Our government is delighted to join with the great people of Martensville to celebrate this vital project in one of the fastest-growing cities in Saskatchewan,” Heppner said. “The community can now enjoy the benefits of this state-of-the-art high school and new athletic pavilion thanks to the hard work and commitment from the Prairie Spirit School Division and municipal partners who helped make this project into a reality.”
The expansion more than doubles the size of the Grades 9-12 high school and is designed to accommodate more than 750 students. It features open concept learning spaces allowing for more natural light, 20 new classrooms, computer and science lab, music room, support spaces for special needs and learning assistance programs, and a performing arts area with a 300-seat theatre that will be shared with the community.
The project also included renovations to the original classrooms, library and resource centre, gymnasium, Practical and Applied Arts, Home Economics and Industrial Arts rooms.
“The Prairie Spirit Board of Education is pleased to celebrate the grand opening of the expanded and renovated Martensville High School,” Prairie Spirit School Division Board Chair Larry Pavloff said. “The board would like to thank staff and students and acknowledge their patience and flexibility throughout this extensive project. This facility represents a strong partnership between Prairie Spirit School Division, the Ministry of Education and the City of Martensville. We know our students will benefit as they learn and grow together in this beautiful school.”
“To be part of a new school build and renovation is something that teachers and school employees are fortunate to be a part of once in a career,” Martensville High School Principal Brad Nichol said. “Our new school is an inspiring learning space with many expanded facilities that will benefit and shape the students of Martensville for years to come.”
“I like how open the school is and its good design, which makes for a better learning environment,” Grade 12 student Brennan Blevins said. “The new school allows for so many different opportunities, like the classroom spaces, the gym and the new theatre. It’s really great!”
Students also have access to a 50,000 square-foot community athletic pavilion attached to the school, which opened in 2014.
Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $1.5 billion toward 67 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
