The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are partnering with Habitat for Humanity in Yorkton to help support another Saskatchewan family in need of a safe, quality home.Today, Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Canora-Pelly MLA Terry Dennis on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Tina Beaudry-Mellor, officially launched the construction of the Habitat for Humanity home.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to once again work closely with our valued partners to ensure families access safe and affordable housing in Saskatchewan and across Canada,” said Goodale. “We are very excited to see a deserving family from Yorkton become the beneficiary of the great collaboration between the Governments of Canada, Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity.”
“This sod-turning marks a new beginning for another Saskatchewan family in greatest housing need,” Dennis said. “Our government and partners are pleased to work together to help this family’s dream of owning a home come true. Projects like this are a wonderful opportunity to come together and make great things happen in communities across the province, thereby keeping Saskatchewan strong.”
“We are very proud to be turning sod for our seventh home in Yorkton,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said. “Habitat for Humanity exists to bring opportunity for affordable homeownership to hardworking, low-income families. We are thrilled that another family will have a wonderful experience working with the Yorkton chapter and their community partners to build their home. We look forward to welcoming them home in 2018.”

- The home, located at 222 Betts Avenue, will be a three-bedroom bungalow approximately 1,008 square feet (94 square metres).
- The Government of Canada, through Canada and Mortgage Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Government of Saskatchewan, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), jointly contributed $50,000 to build the home through the 2014-2019 Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) Agreement.
- The province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity totals $9.8 million since March 2009. Of this amount, the federal and provincial governments have invested $2 million, thanks to the Social Infrastructure Fund, under the two most recent agreements between Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity.
- This investment supports Saskatchewan’s Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have access to affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
- Habitat for Humanity’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home or other Habitat homes.
