The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with the City of Saskatoon and Quint Development Corporation (Quint), officially broke ground for a new 26-unit rental-housing project for individuals and families who require supports in order to secure and maintain housing.Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Tina Beaudry-Mellor, Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), and Charlie Clark, Mayor of the City of Saskatoon, and Joy Crawford, Chair of Quint Development Corporation’s Board of Directors, made the announcement today.
“These 26 new homes will make a real difference in the lives of families in Saskatoon,” Goodale said. “Our government is proud to work with our valued partners and remains committed to making communities stronger through projects like these both in Saskatchewan and across Canada.”
“This project will provide 26 safe, quality homes for people in this community who have complex needs and are not able to maintain housing without support services. I wish to congratulate everyone involved with this project, including Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the City of Saskatoon and Quint Development Corporation,” Beaudry-Mellor said. “Our government is pleased to be involved with this initiative that supports hard to house families and individuals. This new affordable housing will further our plan to keep Saskatchewan strong.”

“Quint’s Affordable Housing Program is expanding in order to meet the growing need for larger family sized safe and affordable rental housing in Saskatoon,” Crawford said. “In addition, this infill development will significantly improve the aging housing stock in Pleasant Hill and help strengthen and revitalize the neighbourhood. Quint is thankful to all of our partners in this project who have helped us fill this pressing need in the city.”

- Located on the 200 block of Avenue O South in Saskatoon, this development will consist of the construction of 26 brand new units – eight one-bedroom units (493 square feet or 45.8 square meteres), 10 three-bedroom units (1,064 square feet or 98.84 square metres), six four-bedroom units (1,475 square feet or 137.03 square metres), and two four-bedroom accessible units (1,912 square feet or 177.63 square metres) in a townhouse complex in the core-neighbourhood of Pleasant Hill.
- The federal and provincial governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing up to $3.19 million toward the project under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) 2014-2019 Agreement.
- City of Saskatoon will provide $557,000 in funding plus additional incentives towards the project Quint is contributing about $1.7 million in the form of cash equity and mortgage financing.
- Established in 1995, Quint is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the economic and social well-being of Saskatoon’s west side core neighbourhoods. Quint has provided affordable housing and employment services, and economic development for the residents of these neighbourhoods. Quint owns and operates 68 affordable housing units. In addition, Quint provides additional services through their Eviction Prevention Program, which focuses on stabilizing low-income families.
- This investment supports Saskatchewan’s Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have access to affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
