Province Proclaims Approved Private Service Homes Week

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed February 18 to 24 as Approved Private Service Homes Week to recognize the support that approved home providers and their families offer to residents with intellectual disabilities or significant mental health conditions.

“Approved home providers offer remarkable support to the people of our province by welcoming some of Saskatchewan’s most vulnerable citizens into their homes and families,” Social Services Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor said.  “Approved Private Service Homes Week is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on the generosity and dedication of approved home providers, and to offer our gratitude for the incredible services they provide each and every day.”

Saskatchewan Approved Private Homes Inc. (SAPH) is a registered non-profit organization and professional association that provides information, education, resources and supports to approved private service home providers and promotes approved home development across the province.

“Approved private service homes make it possible for people experiencing disabilities to enjoy a meaningful life as part of a family and community, develop life skills, take part in recreational activities, and cultivate friendships,” SAPH Executive Director Iris Miller Dennis said.  “This week highlights the incredible value of approved private service homes and honours the people and families who demonstrate such care, compassion, and professionalism.”

“Our government is very grateful that SAPH offers such important supports to approved home providers, and we appreciate their ongoing advocacy for the approved private home sector,” Beaudry-Mellor said.

The Ministry of Social Services currently certifies 192 approved private service homes that support approximately 447 individuals.  Additionally, Regional Health Authorities license 187 mental health approved homes that provide approximately 800 licensed spaces.
