Health and Safety Training

Employers in Saskatchewan have an obligation to ensure that members of occupational health committees and health and safety representatives receive training on their duties and functions. WorkSafe Saskatchewan hosts a series of occupational health and safety classroom and online training sessions. Visit WorkSafe Saskatchewan Training for a complete list of courses or contact the Occupational Health and Safety Division at 1-800-567-SAFE if you're unsure about what types of training to take.

The training is aimed at workers who are responsible for conducting inspections and investigations related to health and safety at their places of employment. The workers who will benefit the most from this training are:

  • Members of occupational health committees
  • Health and safety representatives
  • Managers
  • Supervisors

1. Online WHMIS Training

This course is developed for Saskatchewan workers who work with or could be exposed to hazardous materials at their workplace. It is offered online only. After workers have completed this basic WHMIS Training, employers are required to give workers workplace-specific training about any chemicals they will be exposed to or asked to use.

2. Level 1 Occupational Health Committee Training

This course is an introductory course for occupational health committee (OHC) members and occupational health and safety (OHS) representatives and is offered in-class only.

By the end of this two day course, participants will know:

  • How to locate relevant information in Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety legislation to address occupational health and safety (OHS) issues in their workplace
  • The requirements for establishing and operating an effective OHC
  • The duties and role of the OHC within the OHS Workplace Responsibility System
  • How to identify and assess workplace hazards
  • How to identify and recommend corrective actions to control workplace hazards
  • How to handle OHS concerns and investigate refusals to work (section 23 of the Act)

3. Level 2 Occupational Health Committee Training

Level 2 Occupational Health Committee (OHC) Training is a course for OHC Co-Chairpersons and occupational health and safety representatives. 

By the end of this two day course, participants will know how to:

  • Plan and conduct an OHC workplace inspection
  • Identify and assess deficiencies during OHC workplace inspections
  • Identify and recommend corrective actions to address deficiencies found during OHC workplace inspections
  • Fulfil their regulatory requirement to investigate workplace accidents and dangerous occurrences
  • Collect and analyze evidence during an investigation
  • Identify and assess; direct, indirect and root causes of workplace accidents and dangerous occurrences
  • Identify and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence of workplace accidents and dangerous occurrences
Pre-requisite for attending this course is Level 1 Occupational Health Committee Training.

4. Supervision and Safety Workshop

This course is designed for supervisors. It is offered in-class only.

By the end of this one day course, supervisors will know:

  • How to locate relevant information in Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation to address OHS issues in their workplace
  • The duties and roles of everyone within the OHS Workplace Responsibility System
  • Their duties and required competencies under Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety legislation
  • The role of the supervisor within workplace OHS management systems
  • Specific duties of a supervisor within workplace OHS management systems such as:
    • Hazard identification, risk assessment and hazard control
    • Workplace inspections
    • Incident Investigations
    • Refusals to work
    • Worker training and orientation
