Province Signs Memorandum of Understanding with the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

Released on November 2, 2021

Today, the Government of Saskatchewan and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen ties between educational institutions and advance cooperation in research and the exchange of students and academics between the two jurisdictions.

"Saskatchewan values our long-standing relationship with India, and is excited to re-establish and strengthen its relationship with Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute," Advanced Education Minister Gene Makowsky said. "We will work together to develop provincial international engagement strategies and collaborate with post-secondary institutions and stakeholders to promote Saskatchewan-India education."

Earlier this year, the Government of Saskatchewan opened an international office in New Delhi to further strengthen its relationship with India. The province's two universities have collaborated with the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute on a number of projects, as well as in the areas of Arts and Science; Engineering; Agriculture and BioResources; Medicine; and Veterinary Medicine.

"The agreement between the Shastri Institute and the Government of Saskatchewan is an important step in Shastri's new future," Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute President John A. Kershaw said. "We look forward to working with the Government of Saskatchewan and promoting our joint interests in Indian-Canadian academics, social and business interests. Becoming more directly engaged with our member institutions and the governments that support them enhances Shastri's binational/bilateral mandate and will produce long-lasting regional impacts."

The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is a bi-national educational organization with 145 member institutions of higher education throughout India and Canada. Its focus has been to nurture linkages between India and Canada through academic exchanges, partnerships and networks. The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute offers programs that are accessible to students, faculty members, and academic institutions in Saskatchewan.
