Significant savings, increased convenience and positive customer feedback have resulted in the province-wide expansion of the Government of Saskatchewan’s use of short-term vehicle rentals from the private sector.The one-year pilot project used rental vehicles from the private sector to fulfill government business needs for short-term travel required in Saskatoon, Prince Albert and North Battleford. It resulted in $275,000 in travel savings.
“The success of this pilot project and further expansion is part of our commitment to not only be fiscally responsible, but to also look for the most efficient ways to deliver services,” Central Services Minister Christine Tell said. “Business commitments can take our employees across Saskatchewan and we want to ensure they have the best access to vehicles to help them in their jobs serving the people of our province.”
The government will release the Request for Proposals on November 16 to evaluate parties interested in providing this service to government. A successful provider will be chosen early next year, with full implementation expected in Spring 2018.
Short-term vehicle access for employee travel was previously supplied by the Central Vehicle Agency’s government-owned automobiles. Longer-term travel needs will still be provided by government-owned vehicles.
Benefits of third-party delivery for rental vehicles include more modern vehicle access, longer hours of service from vehicle providers, and more drop-off and pick-up locations.
By working with third-party providers for government vehicle use, the province can save money while providing employees with more efficient services to meet their needs.
