The Government of Saskatchewan is at the top of its class in green building management in Saskatchewan.The Saskatchewan Polytechnic Moose Jaw Campus was recently awarded the provincial BOMA Earth Award in the industrial office category for excellence in sustainable commercial building management. Several other publicly-owned buildings were finalists.
The annual Earth Awards are presented to buildings that rate the highest on indoor air quality, energy and water conservation, and a host of other environmental best practices. Each building must possess valid BOMA BEST (Building Owners and Managers Association Building Environmental Standards) certification, which is the Canadian industry standard for commercial building sustainability. The Ministry of Central Services has more certified BOMA BEST properties than any other property management organization in the province.
“We are dedicated to investing in sustainable building management,” Central Services Minister Christine Tell said. “Reducing the environmental footprint of government’s operations is the right thing to do for our province and our people.”
The Polytechnic campus is a good example of what the ministry’s investment in sustainability can achieve. The campus’s water usage is about half of the national BOMA BEST average for similar buildings and its energy usage is approximately 30 per cent lower than the average for Canadian colleges and universities. As well, it has a rigorous recycling policy that diverts 25 per cent of waste from the landfill.
“Congratulations to Sask Polytechnic Moose Jaw Campus on receiving a BOMA Earth Award for an Industrial Office,” BOMA Regina President Victoria Gabel said. “We’re pleased with the Ministry of Central Services’ participation in BOMA BEST; their strong representation in the certification program is indicative of the Government of Saskatchewan’s high level of commitment to sustainability and responsible building management practices.”
