PROVINCE HELPS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD FIRST HOME IN NIPAWIN

Released on April 13, 2012

A Habitat for Humanity partner family in Nipawin will soon receive the gift of a lifetime - their very own home, thanks to $50,000 in funding assistance from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Construction of the home was officially launched today at a sod-turning ceremony in Nipawin. The project is a first for Nipawin, which is also one of the smallest communities in Canada to have a Habitat for Humanity home.

"Our government is pleased to team up with Habitat for Humanity to help a Nipawin family achieve their dream of living in a safe, quality home," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "This project is one of many that is the result of individuals, business and government working hand in hand to help create a healthy housing environment for everyone. This home is another example of our government's commitment in action, and of what it means to keep the Saskatchewan Advantage."

"The Town of Nipawin is proud to be part of the Habitat for Humanity project," Nipawin Mayor Lawrence Rospad said. "This community has committed property for the next five years for this and future homes. The many groups and people of Nipawin and area have come together to volunteer and contribute to this worthwhile project. It has created a sense of involvement and importance while bringing this community together in a positive manner. Nipawin is a community entering the future with promise and potential as we continue to build upon our opportunities and create a supportive community in the heart of the northeast twin lakes region of the province. We applaud the many people who have volunteered and donated toward the Habitat for Humanity project making it a successful housing development initiative and an example of sustainable rural development."

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert and Lloydminster to help build a total of 90 homes across the province. Saskatchewan Housing Corporation has advanced $2.4 million of the $4.5 million available to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province to assist in the delivery of 48 homes for families. Habitat for Humanity anticipates 30 starts throughout Saskatchewan in 2012.

This project is aligned with a number of strategic priorities that were outlined in the Provincial Housing Strategy released in August 2011. These priorities include the need to increase housing supply, to improve housing affordability and to support individuals and families in greatest housing need.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Homeowners must contribute 500 hours of volunteer labour "sweat equity" toward the building of their home.
