One of the most ambitious theatre projects in Saskatchewan's history is about to get underway as the Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Theatre Tour hits the road. The tour will bring professional theatre to more than 50 communities throughout the province."Audiences who join us for the theatre tour will share in a unique and innovative centennial experience that celebrates all that we are and all that we can become," Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "It is a massive undertaking to tour a play of this magnitude to more than 50 communities in just a few short months. However, the effort will be worth it, creating a lasting centennial memory for all who attend whether it's residents or visitors to our province."
Dancing Sky Theatre is producing "All My Relations – Wahkotowin." At a launch held in the theatre's hometown of Meacham, the audience was introduced to a giant puppet that represents Saskatchewan's environment. It is one of several puppets that will join the cast of Saskatchewan actors for a performance that encompasses the range of experience and cultures within the province.
"We have always worked exclusively with Saskatchewan people because we believe that it is vital to the future of the province to sustain a community of working and creating artists, and because our artists are as good as any in the world," Dancing Sky Theatre Artistic Director Angus Ferguson said. "We encourage Saskatchewan residents and visitors to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, food and bring all of their relatives to this wonderful centennial event."
"All My Relations – Wahkotowin" was written specifically to commemorate the centennial year. It has been produced as a collective collaboration, where each of the individuals involved with the performance has opportunity to help shape the content of the script and the set design. The lead writers are award-winning Saskatchewan authors Maria Campbell and Trevor Herriot.
In an effort to provide an opportunity for as many people as possible to participate in the experience of live theatre, "All My Relations – Wahkotowin" will travel directly to the people and be performed outdoors where possible. There is no cost to attend the performances.
"All My Relations – Wahkotowin" debuts in Bruno on June 29th, 2005 then travels to more than 50 other communities throughout the province between July and September. The final performance will be held in Dancing Sky Theatre's hometown of Meacham on September 4th, 2005, when the province officially celebrates its 100th birthday.
