The Government of Saskatchewan and industry representatives have launched a new task force to lead the development of the province's biodiesel industry."Biofuels, such as biodiesel, are a natural fit for Saskatchewan," Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said. "Developing this industry will benefit our agricultural economy through further value-added activity and help protect and preserve the environment through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions."
Biodiesel is a renewable alternative fuel made from crops such as canola, as well as from animal fats.
The Biodiesel Development Task Force will determine the current status of the biodiesel industry and its potential for the province; identify challenges and opportunities; consult and communicate with key stakeholders; and make recommendations to further the industry.
The Task Force is being co-chaired by Saskatchewan Canola Growers Association (SCGA) President Darin Egert and SCGA Executive Director Judie Dyck.
"It is important that producers play a major role in moving a biodiesel industry forward in this province," Egert said. "We use about one-third of the diesel fuel in Saskatchewan so we have the most to gain, since we are both feedstock suppliers for the production of biodiesel as well as users. We want biodiesel plants in our backyards, along with the jobs."
"Here in Saskatchewan, we have 45 million acres – or 46 per cent – of Canada's cropland. We have the resources; we have the world-renowned research and development facilities; and we have the drive and enthusiasm to become leaders in the bio-economy," Wartman said. "I look forward to receiving the recommendations of the Task Force on how to move this exciting industry forward, as we continue to build the province's green and prosperous economy."
