COMPANY OWNER CONVICTED IN DEATH OF WORKER

Sye Rosin, owner of Sye Rosin Snow Removal of Regina, has been fined a total of $34,000 under the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. Rosin was convicted following an incident that caused the death of a worker.

On February 16th, 2003, an 18-year-old worker at Sye Rosin Snow Removal was crushed to death while attempting repairs on a front-end loader. The employee was working alone at the time of the incident.

Rosin was convicted in Provincial Court on April 11th, 2005 of contributing to the death of a worker by failing to provide and maintain a safe work environment. Sentencing occurred today.

"Last year, we investigated 13 work-related fatalities," Occupational Health and Safety Division Executive Director Allan Walker said. "This conviction sends the message that there are consequences for employers who fail to comply with OH and S regulations."

The Occupational Health and Safety Division will conduct over 4,500 workplace inspections and provide training to over 4,000 employer and worker representatives on their safety responsibilities this year.

Maximum penalties for an offence that causes the death or serious injury of a worker are $300,000 and two years in jail.
