Sergeant Michael Wiggins of Moose Jaw today presented Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel with a special flag that will fly over Saskatchewan at the Legislature on September 4th, 2005 – Centennial Day.This Saskatchewan flag flew over Camp Julien in Kabul, Afghanistan as personnel deployed on Operation ATHENA celebrated their home province's 100th birthday with cake, Centennial balloons and a package of goodies provided by Premier Lorne Calvert and his colleagues at the Saskatchewan Legislature.
"These men and women, veterans and those currently in active duty, have sacrificed so much to preserve our way of life. They truly embody the spirit and pride of our centennial," Hagel said. "Flying this flag over our province serves as a symbol of those sacrifices and is an opportunity to show our respect to our veterans and our current military personnel who have made selfless contributions to our nation and to our province."
This Saskatchewan flag also flew over Camp Julien on May 22nd, 2005, over a monument commemorating the death of seven Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan. Two of these men were killed when their vehicle ran over a mine in November 2003. Master-Corporal Jason Hamilton of Whitewood, Saskatchewan saved one of his comrades who was injured in the incident, and earned the Star of Courage for his action.
The flag will be housed in a display case in the lobby of the legislature until September 4th, at which point it will be raised to fly over the province.
