Nobody throws a party like Saskatchewan and in three weeks, Canada's most senior representative will join in those celebrations. Governor General Adrienne Clarkson will arrive on September 3rd and depart on September 5th."We are very pleased to welcome the Governor General to the once-in-a-lifetime celebrations that will mark the official anniversary of Saskatchewan," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "In addition to being known for our 100 years of heart, Saskatchewan has made significant contributions that have benefited all of Canada, such as Medicare. As we prepare to enter our second century, our hopes for this great province and our people remain strong."
The centennial spirit has been building throughout the summer and continues to grow, with more than 3,400 events occurring throughout Saskatchewan in 2005. From homecomings and family reunions to cultural celebrations and musical festivals, volunteers in communities large and small have been working overtime to ensure the party of the century is celebrated in their hometown.
"We're already showing the world why it could use a little more Saskatchewan and that will become even more evident on September 4th," Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "Saskatchewan pride will reach new heights as residents and visitors celebrate all that our wonderful province has become and all that it will be in the future."
While centennial celebrations will occur throughout the long weekend, September 4th marks the official anniversary of Saskatchewan's entry into Confederation. Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 has provided funding to 15 centennial host communities to ensure that no-cost or low-cost centennial celebrations are held throughout the province. Almost all of Saskatchewan residents are within a two-hour drive of one of these centres.
Each community has organized a day filled with activities and entertainment. The September 4th celebrations will wrap up with an awesome fireworks display choreographed to music and narration.
"Never before have fireworks been launched simultaneously in 15 communities provincewide and it will be a magnificent display," Hagel said.
The show is being produced by Regina-based Ruggieri Fireworks, who recently won first place at La Fête du Lac des Nations Les Grands Feux Teleus du Canada, a national fireworks competition in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
