The government has renewed its commitment to involving youth in decision-making by extending the mandate of the Provincial Youth Advisory Committee through to 2010."I am pleased the committee will continue to inform and enrich government initiatives and policies of concern to youth," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "The Provincial Youth Advisory Committee has proven to be an excellent vehicle for honest, meaningful and effective dialogue between young people and government."
The 25-member committee was established to increase communication and input between Saskatchewan's young people and the provincial government. Its make-up is diverse with members from ages 14 to 29. The committee also includes representation from the North, First Nations and Métis communities, from urban and rural locales, visible minorities, and youth with disabilities.
The Provincial Youth Advisory Committee will have 12 new members who represent diverse communities, perspectives and ages.
"The excellent response to the call for new members really put into perspective for me the amazing breadth of talent, enthusiasm and potential that Saskatchewan young people possess," Beatty said. "These new members will contribute fresh ideas, unique perspectives and invaluable insight to issues that affect youth."
Since its inception in April 2003, the Provincial Youth Advisory Committee has been an influential contributor to government initiatives and policy issues of concern to youth. The committee meets a minimum of four times per year, and some of the priorities it has identified include youth attraction and retention, education, employment and training opportunities.
