PROVINCE SUPPORTING REGIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITIES

Released on April 22, 2005

The province is providing a grant to support regional waste management systems until consultations on a comprehensive multi-material recycling program for paper, plastics, glass and tin are complete. A multi-material recycling program is expected to be in place in 2006-07.

Saskatchewan Environment Minister David Forbes presented Association of Regional Waste Management Authorities Chair Wally Lorenz with a cheque for $700,000. The presentation took place at the North Central Saskatchewan Waste Management facility in Prince Albert.

"This grant is consistent with our vision of improving waste management and recycling programs and it is especially appropriate that we are doing this today on Earth Day," Forbes said. "It also signifies our commitment to work in collaboration with all stakeholders to reduce waste and build a green and prosperous Saskatchewan."

The Association will administer the distribution of $700,000 to the regional waste management authorities. The funding is to be used by the authorities for recycling operations and the provisions of the grant will require that regional authorities submit business plans and meet specific reporting requirements.

"Without this financial commitment from the province, our progress to sustain and expand recycling in Saskatchewan would be significantly undermined," Lorenz said. "We must continue to develop affordable ways for people to recycle and reduce reliance on landfills."

There are a number of regional waste management authorities serving 121 thousand people across the province from 92 urban communities, 49 rural municipalities, two First Nations and several northern communities. The province and municipalities have invested approximately $4 million each in the development of regional waste management systems.
