PREMIER EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES ON DEATH OF THE POPE

Released on April 2, 2005

Premier Lorne Calvert today expressed condolences to the Roman Catholic community of Saskatchewan on the death of the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II.

"On behalf of the government and people of Saskatchewan, I extend sincere condolences to all mourning the loss of a great and holy man," Calvert said.

The pontificate of Pope John Paul II is one of the longest and most remarkable in the history of the Papacy. He has been a prominent world leader for the past 26 years.

"Pope John Paul II's promotion of greater understanding among Judaism, Islam and Christianity, as well as his encouragement of non-violent resistance to political oppression have touched the lives of millions of Catholics and non-Catholics alike," Calvert said.
