Animal and human health researchers in Saskatchewan received a boost today from new government funding.Learning Minister Andrew Thomson announced today at the University of Saskatchewan that the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) will receive $9 million over the next five years from the provincial government's Innovation and Science Fund.
"VIDO's ground-breaking research and valuable contributions to animal and human health have a positive impact on the research culture of this province and on Saskatchewan's economy," Thomson said.
The funding will support the work of research scientists and the indirect costs of research while VIDO establishes sources of sustainable funding.
"The Government of Saskatchewan's contribution is pivotal for VIDO's continued success in recruiting and retaining world-class scientists," VIDO Director Dr. Lorne Babiuk said. "This funding will ensure VIDO's continued viability and ability to generate additional revenue, enhancing economic activity in Saskatchewan."
VIDO is fully owned by the University of Saskatchewan, and is a premier research institute not only for the province but also for Canada and the world. The organization is renowned for its research and for its development and commercialization of products used by producers in the food animal industry. It is credited with five "world firsts" in animal vaccine research and is expanding into human health applications.
"VIDO has been a tremendously successful research organization that is now positioned to have a significant impact on this city and this province," University of Saskatchewan President Peter MacKinnon said. "Today's funding commitment demonstrates the government's recognition of the important work these scientists are doing and we are very grateful for their continued support."
The provincial government's Innovation and Science Fund is intended to promote economic growth and quality of life through innovation and research, and to develop Saskatchewan's human capital and innovative capacity.
