Flags are lowered to half-mast at the Legislative Building today to observe the second anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States."We were all deeply moved by the events of September 11th, 2001," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "Today, as thoughts of the victims, survivors and their families are on our minds, we should also take the time to recognize and be grateful for the contributions and heroism of many people who protect our families and communities every day."
The Premier noted that the events of September 11th have made us all more aware of the urgency and importance of being prepared for any type of emergency.
The Province has enhanced provincial emergency management programs, including the introduction of new legislation, The Miscellaneous Statutes (Security Management) Act to update and facilitate our provincial response readiness and capability. Department and Crown Emergency Plans are being reviewed and updated and more strategies developed to assist communities in developing their local emergency plans.
"Public safety is a first priority in any type of emergency situation, including terrorist-related or other security threats. The Province is prepared to respond, through close communication and information-sharing with the federal and other governments, including partnering to provide funds to purchase specialized equipment for emergency services. The Provincial Emergency Plan provides a co-ordinated response across government and support to Saskatchewan municipalities in responding locally," Corrections and Public Safety Minister Andrew Thomson said.
A provincial Ministers' Ad-Hoc Committee and Deputy Ministers' Committee are in place to address the security needs of the province.
