NEW HEALTH CARE FACILITY IN CARROT RIVER

Released on May 23, 2002

People living in the Carrot River area are celebrating the opening of a new

integrated health centre and renovated special care home.

Health Minister John Nilson, along with members of the North East Health

District Board, district administration, health providers, local

representatives and other guests today participated in a ribbon cutting

ceremony for the new Carrot River Health Centre.

"Our top priority is ensuring access to quality health care," Nilson

said. "This project has been a major undertaking in that regard and by

working together the people of this community have designed and created a

new facility that offers a healthy environment for residents, patients,

clients, health providers and staff."

The project replaces the Carrot River Hospital with a health centre

addition to the Pasquia Special Care home. The project brought all of the

community's health services under one roof.

The health centre offers a range of observation, respite, convalescent and

palliative care beds along with laboratory, x-ray, emergency, home care and

community based services. The special care home has renovated

accommodations and a number of safety upgrades.

"This facility is the result of significant planning and discussion," North-

East District Health Board Chair Margaret Anderson said. "Health

providers, other district staff, local organizations and businesses, other

community members and the province each played an important part in the

construction of our new health centre and special care home."

"I congratulate everyone who has devoted their time and energy to this

initiative on the successful completion of this new facility," Nilson

said. "I am confident that it will support the good health of people in

the area for years to come."

The province committed $1.8 million with the community providing $1.1

million toward the total project cost of $2.9 million.
