AFFORDABLE SENIORS' HOUSING IN SHAUNAVON

Released on January 30, 2002

Twenty-six seniors in Shaunavon have a safe, comfortable, affordable place

to call home, thanks to a new housing development made possible by the

province, the Town of Shaunavon, several surrounding municipalities and the

Southwest Health District.

Evergreen Villa was officially opened today by Municipal Affairs and

Housing Minister Ron Osika. The new $2.32 million seniors' home is a 26-

unit, single-story building with a tenant lounge, tub room, laundry and

kitchen.

"The province has been working closely with communities over the past

number of years to develop innovative, cost-effective housing solutions,"

Osika said. "Evergreen Villa is the latest in a series of projects

tailored to address the unique needs of individual Saskatchewan

communities."

"This project is a credit to the dedication, co-operation and good will of

the Province, the Town of Shaunavon, the Southwest Health District and

surrounding municipalities," Shaunavon Housing Authority Chair Debbie

Conrad said. "By working together, we have enabled the residents of

Evergreen Villa to enjoy their retirements in a comfortable, independent

and social setting."

Municipal Affairs and Housing contributed $1.9 million to the project,

including money provided by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, with

the remaining equity provided by a partnership of the Town of Shaunavon,

the Southwest Health District, the Villages of Admiral, Bracken, Climax and

Dollard, and the Rural Municipalities of Arlington, Bone Creek, Carmichael,

Grassy Creek, Lone Tree, White Valley and Wise Creek.

The new building replaces 20 housing units located in the former Southwest

Lodge operated by the Southwest Health District. The Shaunavon Housing

Authority is responsible for the management of the new project.
