ROMANOW COMMENTS ON CWB SALE IN CHINA

Released on February 13, 2001

The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) signed an agreement with the China National

Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Import & Export Corporation to supply China with

500,000 tonnes of wheat. The sale commemorates the 40th anniversary of active

grain trading between the two countries and is valued at an estimated $125

million.

"Given that roughly 60 per cent of CWB wheat comes from Saskatchewan, this deal

is very important for our farmers. The Team Canada mission was an important

catalyst in bringing about the agreement," Roy Romanow said. Former premier

Romanow is leading the Saskatchewan delegation on the Team Canada trade mission

in China at the request of Premier Lorne Calvert.

"It also shows on its 40th anniversary of selling wheat to China, the CWB

continues to be an effective marketer for Saskatchewan wheat and barley."

Saskatchewan businesses and educational institutions signed 17 agreements in

Beijing today with an estimated value of $42.7 million, of which $36.6 million

is Canadian content. In addition, the CWB agreement will see the sale of about

$75 million worth of Saskatchewan wheat.

Team Canada 2001 runs from February 9th - 18th, and include stops in Beijing,

Shanghai and Hong Kong. More information on Team Canada 2001 may be found at
