NEW CEO TO LEAD APPRENTICESHIP COMMISSION

Released on February 1, 2001

R.D. (Bob) Guthrie has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the new

industry-led Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission.

Through the Commission, industry will help employers get the skilled workers

they need and help young people take advantage of great career opportunities in

the trades.

"The Saskatchewan Commission structure is a unique model for apprenticeship

training in Canada," Commission Board Chair Paul McLellan said. "Industry is

now in charge of managing the trades training and certification system to

ensure it benefits both employers and workers in our growing economy."

The Commission was created in 1999. It gives industry a lead role to renew

apprenticeship training in Saskatchewan. Its goal is to ensure apprenticeship

training meets industry's labour market needs, increase access to quality

careers for youth and underrepresented groups, and match the skills needed for

jobs now and in the future.

"I have been involved with trades and apprenticeship for over 20 years," CEO

Bob Guthrie said. "This is a new and exciting opportunity for me to actively

work with business and labour to build a responsive, innovative and flexible

trades training and certification system closely matched with the skills needed

for future jobs and industry growth in Saskatchewan."

Apprenticeship is a work-based training program, which trains about 5400

apprentices each year and serves over 8000 Saskatchewan employers. There are

46 trades in Saskatchewan involving the agriculture, automotive, construction,

heavy industry and tourism sectors.
