PREMIER PAYS TRIBUTE TO PIERRE TRUDEAU

Premier Romanow today saluted the accomplishments of former Canadian Prime

Minister Pierre Trudeau.



Trudeau died today at the age of 81.



"Over the 20 years Mr. Trudeau spent in federal politics, and even beyond, he

was a passionate defender of this nation, of our federal system and of the

truly Canadian belief that our identity as Canadians is not compromised but

strengthened when we identify ourselves in other ways," Romanow said.



"You can be a proud Quebecois, Trudeau said, and a proud Canadian. You can be

a proud citizen of Saskatchewan, he said, and a proud and important citizen of

this nation."



Premier Romanow added the legacy Trudeau will leave to the people of Canada is

that there is strength in our diversity, and that we can honour what brings us

together by respecting our differences.



The premier also admired Trudeau for his intellect.



"He was an accomplished lawyer and scholar, a prolific writer - truly a man of

many rare intellectual gifts.



"He was also very charming, which has been well documented. Gracious and

sophisticated, and - this might surprise some - very funny, with a sharp, dry

wit. He was a very robust sportsman and adventurer."



The premier concluded through Trudeau, all Canadians adventured together but

now that adventure ends.



"I want to extend my deepest condolences to the Trudeau family, on behalf of my

wife Eleanore, the Government of Saskatchewan, and the people of our province."
