The City of Moose Jaw will begin the clean up of three contaminated servicestation sites for redevelopment at 110 4th Avenue NW, 240 Caribou Street W, and
546 Manitoba Street E. The sites will be sold following the clean up,
scheduled for this fall, and proceeds of the sale will be used to clean up
other contaminated sites in the city.
"We applaud the City of Moose Jaw for their efforts to clean up the
environment," Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) Minister
Buckley Belanger said. "The success of this project shows how SERM can help
communities clean up abandoned contaminated sites."
Mayor Ray Boughen of the City of Moose Jaw said, "The city has been restricted
in its use of some properties because of environmental contamination. We are
proud of the collaboration with the provincial government and the financial
support from the federal government to allow for an innovative environmentally
friendly program."
SERM and the City of Moose Jaw today signed an agreement making the clean up
possible by acknowledging SERM's polluter pay policy on contaminated site
liability. SERM's policy recognizes that liability should follow the act of
contamination - "polluter pays". The city's efforts to clean up several
contaminated sites for redevelopment will not make them liable for any
unexpected contamination detected at the site.
