Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs (IAA) Minister Jack Hillson and HermonBlind of the Touchwood Agency Tribal Council today signed an agreement to work
together to improve First Nations employment.
This is the first time a First Nations organization has participated as a
partner in the province's Aboriginal Employment Development Program. In the
past, the government has partnered with employers, such as health districts, to
increase Aboriginal employment opportunities in their workplaces. So far, 25
employers are working with government through the program.
The agreement is a commitment for government and the Touchwood Agency Tribal
Council to work together on employment development, cultural development and
economic development.
The 25 employer partners are committed to preparing their workplaces by
breaking down barriers and communicating employment needs.
"With employers increasing Aboriginal opportunities on the one hand and
Aboriginal groups preparing workers on the other, we have a winning
combination," Minister Hillson said.
He also said today's agreement allows the province to communicate the needs of
Saskatchewan's employers directly to a First Nations group. As well, the
agreement can serve as an employment development model that can be used with
other Aboriginal groups.
The Touchwood Agency Tribal Council encompasses five bands located in the
Raymore, Wadena and Lestock areas and has more than 7,000 members.
