LAUTERMILCH TO PROMOTE SASKATCHEWAN POTASH AT INTERNATIONAL FERTILIZER SHOW

Released on September 11, 1998

Energy and Mines Minister Eldon Lautermilch will join the Potash

Corporation of Saskatchewan, IMC Kalium Ltd., Agrium, and Canpotex

Ltd. to promote Saskatchewan potash at the 1998 World Fertilizer

Conference.

Held this year in San Francisco September 13-15, the World Fertilizer

Conference is the premier venue where delegates from around the world

meet to discuss fertilizer trade and development.

"This conference is an excellent opportunity to promote Saskatchewan's

potash industry, to make new contacts and to update the global

fertilizer trade on the recent changes to our potash royalty/tax

system that have made our industry more competitive and more

attractive for investment," Lautermilch said.

Private meetings have been scheduled with Saskatchewan's potash

companies and a number of their major customers.

The Saskatchewan potash industry is the largest producer and exporter

of potash in the world, accounting for approximately 30 per cent of

world potash production.

"The potash industry plays a large role in this province's

economic base, contributing thousands of jobs and significant

taxes to support local and provincial government programs,"

Lautermilch said.

Saskatchewan's potash industry is having another very good year.

Due to significant sales to China, Brazil and some smaller Latin

American countries, offshore sales are up 25 per cent over the

same period last year.

"Potash is one of our province's mineral cornerstones.

Government working with industry at events such as this

conference sends a very strong signal that we are serious about

maintaining our position as a dominant player in world potash

markets," Lautermilch said.
