PROVINCE PROVIDES LAND FOR SASKATOON HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECT

Released on February 10, 1998

Saskatoon Southeast MLA Pat Lorje, on behalf of Municipal Government

Minister Carol Teichrob, today presented the Saskatoon chapter of

Habitat for Humanity with a cheque for $9,500 to purchase a lot

located at 517 Avenue H South, Saskatoon.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to providing safe, secure

shelter for Saskatchewan people who would not otherwise be able to

afford it," Lorje said. "We support new approaches to meet the need

for housing and the partnerships in this project are yet another

example of the Saskatchewan traditions of cooperation, compassion and

community."

Lorje said this is the fourth lot the province has donated to the

Saskatoon chapter of Habitat for Humanity since 1994 in support for

new approaches to meet the need for housing. Other new approaches

include the inner city home ownership project, announced in May 1997,

which enabled 40 low income families to purchase their own homes in

core neighbourhoods in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

The building of a home on the donated property is a joint project of

Habitat for Humanity, the Inner City Council of Churches and the

Riverdale School and Community Association.
