WASCANA LAKE WATER QUALITY AND WEED STUDY

Released on August 29, 1997

Sask Water and Wascana Centre Authority today announced a jointly

funded study of the water quality and weed problems associated with

Wascana Lake in Regina and some major repairs and construction. The

agreement between the Sask Water and Wascana Centre Authority will

enable them to contract the Department of Biology, University of

Regina to examine the type, density and location of the large, rooted

aquatic plants (macrophytes) which grow in the lake and are the

subject of many complaints from the public. These complaints range

from the plant's contribution to lowering the aesthetic value of

Wascana Lake to their physical interference with canoeists and rowers.

Water quality data collection and weed sampling is under way and will

continue until the end of August. A report analysing the data will be

complete by November 30 of this year.

The information collected during this study will be used as baseline

data in evaluating the effect of freezing on the weeds. The roots of

many perennial submerged macrophytes may be intolerant to freezing and

might not overwinter in deep frost.

Sask Water is planning to undertake repairs to the Albert Street

Weir during the winter of 1997-1998, which will involve lowering

the level of the lake between September and early May. Reducing

lake levels in the fall will expose the bottom of the lake and

allow heavily weeded areas to freeze thoroughly. Lake levels

will be restored by spring runoff. Another season of study will

be required after lake levels return to normal to determine the

effects of the weed root freezing.

Wascana Centre Authority plans to use this period of lake

drawdown to reconstruct the deteriorating section of retaining

wall on the north shore of Wascana Lake that extends from the

band stand to the Boat Club monument. The Authority also plans

to construct a boat landing at this location. Landscaping around

the new boat dock will be undertaken in 1998.
