Water levels in streams and rivers throughout southern Saskatchewan aresubsiding, but there are still areas of concern, according to Sask
Water's latest forecast.
There continues to be widespread flooding of agricultural lands and
farmsteads in the Regina area and in southeast Saskatchewan near the
Manitoba border. The continued cool, wet weather has delayed the post-
runoff drying of these lands and is likely to delay seeding operations.
A number of farmsteads south of Regina are experiencing flooding. Sask
Water is assisting these farmers by providing surveys and water level
information.
In the Qu'Appelle River valley, water levels have receded in the
Lumsden-Craven area and flows are now down to 50 cubic metres per
second (m3/s), compared to the peak flow of 162 m3/s.
Water levels are now cresting on the Pasqua, Echo, Mission and Katepwa
lakes and numerous cottages have been flooded. Ice is still covering
between 30 and 70 per cent of each of the lakes and is expected to
break up within the next few days. Damage from floating ice will
remain a concern until it is finally gone.
Water levels on Crooked and Round Lakes are now 0.6 and 0.4 metres,
respectively, below the peak levels experienced earlier and are not
expected to rise further. The potential for ice damage will continue
for several more days until the ice finally melts.
The water level on Last Mountain Lake is at 490.9 metres, 0.8 metres
above the normal summer level. The lake is expected to rise a further
20 centimetres before cresting near the middle of May. The potential
for ice damage continues.
Water levels in the North and South Saskatchewan rivers have been
slightly above normal but have not posed serious flooding problems,
except for ice jams in a few locations. Above normal flows are
forecast for the month of June, as the above normal snow pack on the
eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains begins to melt. Major summer
rain storms in the foothills and mountain areas could contribute
significantly to peak flows.
