PROVINCE AND REGINA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SIGN EDUCATIONAL ALLIANCE

Released on April 22, 1996

Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) Minister Lorne
Scott and Regina Public School Board Chair Lynne Johnson today signed a
partnership agreement to formalize the existing relationship between
schools in the Division and SERM.

"The agreement, signed on Earth Day, supports the department's mandate
of promoting respect and a sense of stewardship for the environment and
its resources through educational programs, partnerships and
informational materials," Scott said.

"The alliance supports this mandate by allowing the schools to learn
more about the department's existing programs and promotes a positive
approach to environmental education," Johnson said.

Some of the existing programs available from SERM include the Clean Cat
School Program, the Speakers Bureau, the Resource Reader and the
Environmental Resource Network. This alliance may also lead to special
environmental projects in which both parties will be able to take a
more proactive role in environmental education.

"This partnership is an extension of the positive relationship that
exists between the Regina Public School Board and the province, and
lays the groundwork for a rewarding partnership," said Johnson.

"With the signing of this agreement, the students will become active
environmental citizens, benefitting all of us, now and in years to
come," Scott said.
