SASKATCHEWAN-UKRAINE CO-OPERATION AGREEMENT GETS APPROVAL

Released on May 6, 1995

Premier Roy Romanow today announced that the Saskatchewan-Ukraine
Advisory Committee and the government of Saskatchewan have approved a
Plan of Action to expand Saskatchewan's relations with Ukraine.

Speaking to the Saskatchewan Provincial Council of the Ukrainian
Canadian Congress, Romanow said the Plan of Action, which has yet to be
finalized with the government of Ukraine, will significantly expand
Saskatchewan's ties with Ukraine.

"This Plan of Action gives us the basis on which we can offer the
Ukrainian government help in building the economic, social and
political infrastructures inherent in a free and democratic nation,"
Romanow said. "At the same time, the commercial co-operation as laid
out in the Plan of Action opens opportunities to businesses,
educational institutions and other organizations within Saskatchewan."

The community-based Saskatchewan-Ukraine Advisory Committee was formed
to consult with the community and the federal and provincial
governments and make recommendations for the expansion of
Saskatchewan-Ukraine relations. It recommended that a Plan of Action
be established between the governments of Saskatchewan and Ukraine.

The Plan of Action encompasses public administration, exchanges and
implementation of sectoral projects including energy, agriculture,
health, education, environment, culture, business development, and
democratic development.

The Saskatchewan proposal now will be sent to the ministerial task
force in the government of Ukraine which was set up to negotiate and
implement the proposals for co-operation between the two parties.
