DESIGNATED DRIVER PROGRAM BEGINS THIS WEEKEND

Released on June 28, 1995

Joanne Crofford, minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and
Gaming Authority, and Ken MacNair, president of the Hotels Association
of Saskatchewan, today announced that Saskatchewan's designated driver
program officially begins July 1 in bars and lounges across the
province.

"Initial response to the program has been positive," MacNair said. "We
have about 45 establishments signed up so far, which we feel is a good
start. We expect that number to increase as the summer months continue
and the profile of the program increases."

Beginning this weekend, all participating establishments will have a
sign posted and cards on tables to inform patrons of the program.
Servers in the establishments will also wear buttons promoting the
program.

MacNair urged patrons of establishments to ask their servers about the
designated driver program if they do not see these materials.

"The cost to establishments to participate in the designated driver
program is minimal, yet it helps them meet their obligations to see
that customers get home safely following a visit to their businesses,"
MacNair said.

"The designated driver program provides a workable option for people to
get home safely, especially in areas where there are no buses or
taxis," Crofford said. "The government sees this program as an
important step toward reducing the toll drinking and driving takes in
the province. We are particularly pleased to have the program
available during the summer months."

Saskatchewan's designated driver program, Have Someone For The Road,
encourages groups to designate a driver to get them home safely from
the province's liquor establishments.

Designated drivers will be provided with a free wristband by
participating hospitality establishments, making them easily
identifiable to servers. The designated driver will then receive drink
tokens which can be exchanged for complimentary non-alcoholic
beverages.

The designated driver program is a partnership effort with the Hotels
Association of Saskatchewan as the lead organization. The association
is joined by the Liquor and Gaming Authority, Saskatchewan Government
Insurance, and Saskatchewan Health in sponsoring the program.

Additional sponsorship is also being sought from the private sector.
The program partners will contribute more than $200,000 over the next
three years to ensure appropriate marketing, promotion and availability
to all hospitality establishments in the province.
