Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter today announced that
Prairie Malt Limited of Biggar has signed a shipping contract in Brazil
which will result in an increase in sales of Saskatchewan barley.
Prairie Malt is one of the companies participating in the Saskatchewan
trade mission to South America.
The company has signed a contract with Gearbulk Shipping Co. Ltd. of
Rio de Janeiro that involves several of Prairie Malt's South American
customers, including major Brazilian breweries Brahma, Kaiser and
Antarctica. The contract provides Prairie Malt with a dedicated and
timely shipping service that will result in increased shipments to
South America of malt made from Saskatchewan malt barley.
Company officials expect to increase sales into South America by $6
million over the next year as a result of the deal, creating a demand
for an additional 23,000 tonnes of Saskatchewan barley.
"The Prairie Malt contract is good news for Saskatchewan farmers, and
is an example of the tremendous opportunities for Saskatchewan
companies in the growing South American markets," Lingenfelter said.
"At approximately $200 million last year, Saskatchewan exports to
Brazil already amount to 20 per cent of the Canadian total, and the
prospects for further trade are enormous."
Lingenfelter said the markets of South America hold similar promise as
the Mexican market, which has been successfully targeted by
Saskatchewan companies and trade missions in recent years. Sales of
Saskatchewan products to Mexico have increased by more than 70 per cent
over the last two years reaching $171 million at the end of 1994.
Lingenfelter said market opportunities in South America are promising
for malt; plant and animal genetics and embryos; farm machinery;
telecommunications; electrical generation, transmission and
distribution; and oil and gas technology related to horizontal drilling
and enhanced oil recovery techniques. Companies representing these
sectors in the Saskatchewan economy are participating in the trade
mission.
Carlo Ricci, Director of International Sales for Prairie Malt, said
that the minister-led mission was instrumental in getting the shipping
contract signed.
"The minister's presence gave our customers and Gearbulk Shipping Co.
Ltd. the added confidence in Prairie Malt and Saskatchewan farmers to
supply them with the highest quality of Saskatchewan barley," Ricci
said.
Lingenfelter has invited Brazilian companies travelling to Canada this
fall as part of the "Rio comes to Canada" initiative to visit the
province to explore additional joint ventures with Saskatchewan firms.
The minister met today with Emerson Capaz, Minister of Science,
Technology and Economic Development for the State of Sao Paulo, who
also indicated a strong interest in travelling to Saskatchewan in the
near future to further pursue joint venture initiatives as well as
joint research opportunities.
