Test Results

COVID-19 test are confirmed at multiple locations around the province within Saskatchewan Health Authority laboratories, including the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory. Patients, clients and the general public tested for COVID-19 in Saskatchewan will be quickly informed of both their positive and negative COVID-19 lab test results through text message or voice call message notifications. Positive results are followed up with a phone call by public health teams with direction for isolation and symptom monitoring. 

Laboratory (PCR) testing is available to priority individuals who:

  • Are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms
  • Have been identified as a close contact
  • Have had a positive self-test (rapid antigen test)
  • Are identified as part of an outbreak situation, as ordered by the Medical Health Officer (MHO)
  • Require a transfer or admission to acute and congregate settings
  • Require surveillance testing of immunocompromised patients (including chemotherapy, hemodialysis)

We are working to maintain a 24-48 hour turnaround time for test results from symptomatic individuals and those who are close contacts of a known case. Factors such as the volume of tests being processed or the distance the test is transported may affect the length of time it takes to complete the test and notify the patient

The fastest way to receive your COVID-19 test results is online by signing up for MySaskHealthRecord at eHealthsask.ca. Positive and negative results may also delivered by text message if an individual provides consent.  An individual can also book an appointment with their family physician to receive results.

1. Automated Positive and Negative COVID-19 Test Results

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has moved all initial notifications for COVID test results to an automated service. Anyone tested for COVID-19 in Saskatchewan will be quickly informed of both their positive and negative COVID-19 lab test results through text message or voice call message notifications. Auto-notification is an efficient and cost effective way to notify individuals of their negative COVID-19 test results and reach those who have been confirmed as a positive COVID-19 case so they can start self-isolation immediately and begin the contact tracing process prior to the phone call from Public Health.

During a COVID-19 lab tests at participating testing centres, individuals will be asked to provide or confirm their phone number. Based on processing times at the lab, notifications will be sent to those aged 12 years and over regarding their positive or negative COVID-19 lab test result between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Parents/guardians can receive results for dependents under the age of 18 years old.

Your COVID-19 test results from the Saskatchewan Health Authority can be easily identified with the short code 89364 for text messages or 306-655-4603 for voice call messages. If you are not the right recipient and an incorrect contact number has been provided, you can choose the reply option 'Wrong Number' to not accept the text message or voice call message and the SHA will use other contact methods to provide those test results to the right person. 

Positive COVID-19 text message and voice call message notifications will be followed up with a phone call from Public Health or a Community Health Nurse within 24 to 48 hours. Additionally, Public Health will provide the individual with further direction on self-isolation, masking and contact tracing. To receive your COVID-19 test results online, sign up for MySaskHealthRecord at eHealthsask.ca.

Each individual test result will be delivered by an individual text message or voice call, which means you may receive multiple texts or voice calls if you provide a single cellular number for your family unit. Each text message and voice call message will be identified by the first name of the individual who has tested positive. 

There will be no charge from the Saskatchewan Health Authority to receive COVID-19 test results. Depending on your cell phone plan and provider some charges may apply. This system will not require or ask for any financial information or ask you to provide any personal information beyond the information needed to verify or confirm that the correct person has been contacted.

Auto-notification is an efficient and cost effective way to notify individuals of their negative COVID-19 test results and reach those who have been confirmed as a positive COVID-19 case so they can start self-isolation immediately and begin the contact tracing process prior to the phone call from Public Health.

Please note: If you have anonymous text message/call blocking settings enabled on your phone you may need to change this in order to receive the message coming from the SHA number 89364 for text messages or 306-655-4603 for voice call messages as it may not be a number your phone is set to recognize. Additionally, if you receive your test result through text message, your result could be displayed on your phone's screen through a text message by anyone who has access to your phone. 2. Test Results for Travellers

Non-essential international travel continues to be discouraged. However, if you do decide to travel, it is important to follow the recommended travel guidelines. Research the requirements of the airline as well as your destination, as they may be different.

The SHA will not provide lab PCR testing for individuals who are not experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms (asymptomatic). Lab PCR tests will be given to priority individuals who:

  • Are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms
  • Have been identified as a close contact
  • Have had a positive self-test (rapid antigen test)
  • Are identified as part of an outbreak situation, as ordered by the Medical Health Officer (MHO)
  • Require a transfer or admission to acute and congregate settings
  • Require surveillance testing of immunocompromised patients (including chemotherapy, hemodialysis)

Private lab services are available to provide an independent testing service as an option for asymptomatic testing, including for travellers who require proof of a negative PCR COVID-19 test for their airline or destination or for workplace purposes. A self-administered at home self-test (rapid antigen test) will not be accepted as valid proof of negative COVID-19 test results.

The testing is user-pay. Residents and businesses who are interested can view a list of labs offering testing services.

Under this model, the private lab services collect and process test specimens for asymptomatic people. All patient information collected goes to the SHA, and any specimen that is found to be positive is forwarded to the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory for confirmation and verification. All testing performed is included in the daily provincial case report, posted at saskatchewan.ca/COVID19.
