Today, the Government of Saskatchewan passed The From Many Peoples, Strength Act, which will create a new framework for recognizing the days, weeks, and months that celebrate the unique heritages of Saskatchewan's many peoples.
"Saskatchewan is home to many different cultural and faith groups," Parks, Culture, and Sport Minister Alana Ross said. "Including all heritage recognitions under a single framework sends a strong message of unity within our society".
The new framework eliminates the need for representatives of cultural and faith groups to request formal proclamation of their heritage recognition day, week, or month each year. Instead, recognitions are codified in law so that they are automatically proclaimed each year, with a standalone document included for each individual group that articulates their unique identity and heritage.
"We have been working with nearly two dozen cultural and faith communities that are interested in participating," Minister Ross said. "Working with them is an essential part of the process, and our goal is to achieve broad representation".
The regulations to codify the standalone documents developed in collaboration with each group will be brought into effect after The From Many Peoples, Strength Act receives Royal Assent, which is anticipated at the end of the spring 2026 sitting of the Legislative Assembly. In the meantime, representatives of cultural and faith communities are encouraged to continue to submit proclamation requests through the existing process by contacting Minister Ross' office.
"The diversity of Saskatchewan's many peoples and our unique heritages are a source of strength for our province," Minister Ross said. "What more fitting a name for enshrining heritage recognitions in law than our provincial motto".
