Today, Highways Minister Kim Gartner announced upcoming projects in Estevan, North Battleford, Prince Albert and Swift Current supported by the provincial government's annual Urban Highway Connector Program.
"Once completed, these projects will improve key transportation links, which benefits local traffic, commuters and keeps the provincial highway network better connected to move our export-based economy and support Saskatchewan's quality of life," Highways Minister Kim Gartner said.
The Ministry of Highways will invest a total of $6.9 million toward two projects in Swift Current:
- Through the Urban Highway Connector Program (UHCP), an estimated $4 million will rehabilitate 8.5 kms of roads such as four different on-and off-ramps to and from Trans-Canada Highway 1, North and South Service Roads, along with North Service Road West and South Service Road West.
- A $2.9 million provincially-funded capital project to rehabilitate 5.4 kms of additional roads, ramps and service roads managed by the ministry.
- Both ministry projects are expected to begin in late spring and be completed by late fall.
Through the UHCP, the Prince Albert area will see a provincial investment of $180,000 toward improving about 800 metres of 15 Street East (Highway 302). That improvement will complement a more than $13 million ministry-funded capital project on the same road stretching east about 11 km. The ministry is managing this work targeted to begin mid-May and to be completed by late fall.
North Battleford's Territorial Drive on its east side will be widened and repaved between Highway 16 and just north of Airport Road. The ministry through the UHCP is investing $747,000 toward the project and the City of North Battleford will invest $243,000. The City of North Battleford will manage the project.
Estevan's Highway 47 (Souris Avenue) from Wellock Road to the city's north limit will have about $400,000 of provincially-funded UHCP improvements such as resurfacing. A start date has yet to be determined.
UHCP will invest a total of about $3.6 million toward road maintenance and related activities in Estevan, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Meadow Lake, Melfort, Melville, Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Weyburn and Yorkton. UHCP will also fund up to $75,000 toward a cost-shared Humboldt regional transportation study.
The ministry's UHCP helps municipalities improve and maintain urban roads that connect provincial highways.
Motorists should expect delays and be reminded to obey all signage and be alert during any road construction.
