Prescribed Burns Planned for Locations in Wascana Centre

Released on March 30, 2026

The Provincial Capital Commission (PCC) intends to conduct a prescribed burn in Wascana Centre at up to five selected sites from April 20 to 24 as part of a multi-agency Oskana Plains prescribed fire training exchange. These are five of 13 training sites in the Regina area.

The proposed sites include Wascana Hill, the Prairie Arboretum, the Habitat Conservation Area, the Old Native Prairie Restoration Site north of First Nations University of Canada and "Bobolink Field" north of Wascana Country Club.

Map of Wascana Centre in Regina, SK with proposed sites for prescribed burns colour-coded. Wascana Hill (19.4 acres) is coloured yellow. Prairie Arboretum (9.8 acres) is coloured blue. Habitat conservation area (5.9 acres) is coloured red. Old Native prairie restoration site (11.7 acres) is coloured purple. Bobolink filed (63.3 acres) is coloured orange.

A prescribed burn is a controlled and planned use of fire to a certain area of land. After a fire, the vegetation of a burned-over area quickly regenerates. Prescribed burns do not harm the ecosystem but contribute to its long-term health and sustainability by controlling invasive exotic plant species, reducing hazardous fuel loads, stimulating native grass regeneration and enhancing species diversity and habitat health.

The prescribed burn may be postponed if day-of weather conditions will not allow staff to proceed safely.

If the burn is rescheduled, information will be posted at Wascana.ca and on Facebook and Instagram.
