Families and individuals will now have greater access to affordable housing options in North Battleford. The Government of Saskatchewan is responding to local housing needs by converting Valleyview Tower II from seniors' social housing to a mixed-use, affordable housing model and maximizing the capacity of the housing portfolio in the community.
"We are taking a new and innovative approach to expand safe and affordable housing and give more individuals and families a place to call home." Social Services Minister Terry Jenson said.
Under the new model, an affordable housing option will be available for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes who may not otherwise qualify for social housing. Affordable housing tenants will be able to rent a one-bedroom unit for $870/month or a two-bedroom unit for $1,000/month, including utilities and internet.
Seniors living in Valleyview Tower II were offered the option to remain in the building or received support to relocate to the nearby Valleyview Tower I, which continues to operate as seniors' social housing. Designating Valleyview Tower I as senior housing and opening Valleyview Tower II to mixed-use, allows for the allocation of vacant senior units to meet community need for affordable housing options for non-seniors and small families.
Valleyview Tower II is an 89-unit building with 81 one-bedroom units and eight two-bedroom units. Tenant applications can be submitted through the Battlefords Housing Authority starting May 1. Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-serviced basis and applicants will be income-tested and assessed as part of the application process.
