What to Know When Returning a Gift

Released on April 25, 2018

If you are undecided about a gift you received or something you purchased recently, the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) wants you to know about Saskatchewan’s return and exchanges rules.

Under The Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act, retailers are not required to have a return policy but are required to accept returns and exchanges when goods don’t meet the warranty protections found in the Act.

Here are some of the protections in the Act for goods:
  • Goods should work properly;
  • No defects or hidden damage; and
  • Items sold online must match the description.
If a retailer creates a return policy, and it is brought to the attention of the consumer before or at the time of purchase, retailers must honour it.

If you are having problems with returning a purchase and the retailer is not honouring your rights and protections, you can contact the Consumer Protection Division for free at 1-877-880-5550 or by email at consumerprotection@gov.sk.ca.

For more information about return policies and how to protect yourself, visit www.fcaa.gov.sk.ca/returnpolicies.
