Accessibility Improved with New Elevator and Washroom at Royal Saskatchewan Museum

Released on May 23, 2018

The Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) is proud to announce the completion of two major renovation projects: the installation of a more accessible public elevator and a new family-friendly washroom.

“Visitors now have two more great reasons to come and enjoy a revitalized RSM,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said.  “The staff has already received a great deal of positive feedback from guests about the improvements made to the building.  We are so pleased that the RSM is now more accessible and inclusive, and that families with young children can enjoy an improved visitor experience.”

“The accessibility improvements at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum support the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy,” Central Services Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said.  “Through continued investments, Government is making progress on our goal of making Saskatchewan the best place in Canada for people with disabilities to live.  The RSM is a tremendous asset to Saskatchewan and a natural location to showcase our efforts to make this vision a reality.”

A number of other updates have also been completed to refresh and modernize the Museum, including new flooring in the existing washrooms, a fresh coat of paint in the lobby and new carpeting throughout the First Nations Gallery.

The RSM wishes to send a warm “thank you” to all recent visitors for their patience and understanding during the construction period that took place over the past several months.  The RSM staff look forward to welcoming guests into the newly-improved facility during the launch of the latest innovative exhibit, and the many other exciting events happening this spring and summer.

ZOOM, the newest RSM exhibit, opened on May 17.  ZOOM gives visitors the ability to “zoom” in on nature using cutting edge imaging systems.  This exciting exhibit features ten interactive stations that provide guests with a magnified view of bugs, skulls and feathers in a world that you have never imagined was all around you.  An up-close experience you won’t want to miss.

This June, the public will be invited to celebrate Aboriginal History Month at the RSM with several informative programs and events including a special celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the First Nations Gallery.

All summer long the RSM will see the return of other fun family events including Megamunch’s birthday in August.  The public can learn more about upcoming exhibits, programs and events on the RSM’s social media channels, including Twitter at twitter.com/royalsaskmuseum, Facebook at www.facebook.com/Royal.Saskatchewan.Museum and Instagram at instagram.com/royalsaskmuseum.  Plus, through the use of the museum’s newly installed free Wi-Fi, guests are encouraged to post their visits to their social media tagging the museum @royalsaskmusuem or #royalsaskmuseum.

The Saskatchewan Disability Strategy is a 10-year comprehensive Strategy focusing on foundational work in six key areas to improve the lives of people experiencing disability: residential service; respite; accessible transportation; accessibility legislation; service co-ordination and navigation; and awareness of the rights of people experiencing disabilities.

The RSM, located at 2445 Albert Street, is open daily from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Admission is by donation.
