A public inquest into the death of Jordan Lafond will be held March 5-9, 2018 at the Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench in Saskatoon.The first day of the inquest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with remaining start times to be determined by the presiding coroner.
Lafond, 21, was in a vehicle being pursued by the Saskatoon Police Service on October 23, 2016. The vehicle crashed and Lafond was taken into custody. Lafond appeared to be in medical distress and was taken to Royal University Hospital, where he died on October 24, 2016.
Section 19 of The Coroners Act, 1999, states that the Chief Coroner may direct that an inquest be held into the death of any person.
The Office of the Chief Coroner is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
Coroner Tim Hawryluk, Q.C. of Saskatoon will preside at the inquest.
